Poland is located in Eastern Europe (or some argue Central Europe) and borders 7 countries: Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Russia (Kaliningrad) as well as the Baltic Sea.
With a land mass of 312,685 sq km (120,728 sq miles), Poland is the fifth largest country in the European Union, with a population approaching 40 million people.
Torun is located in central Polish lowlands, in the wojewodztwo (province) Kujawsko-Pomorskie, on the banks of the River Vistula (Wisla). The town has just over 200,000 inhabitants including around 30,000 students. The old medieval city centre borders the north bank of the river.
